Dopey's Newberry, SC
July 19th 2008 21:48
My father owned a restaurant in Newberry, SC, and ran it along with my brother. I had to put this in food worth mentioning. My father ran Dopey’s also known as the Tomahawk at Newberry College for more than five decades and was open late at night to serve the college crowd at Newberry College, along with local Newberry residents. His restaurant can be found on the internet under several places including Wikipedia and Newberry College. My father’s burgers and french fries gave me my freshman fifteen. I spent many late nights after college parties getting a burger cut in half and laughing with my friends. Granted my father’s place was a hole in the wall and the decor bordered on eccentric and a fifties style theme complete with a juke box (Fonzie could have walked in and been right at home)…My father passed away on April 7, 2008 and my brother Buzzy is now running Dopey’s. The last time I visited his restaurant for a farewell hamburger and to remember my dad, I swear it was like I could still see my father sitting up on his stool behind the register asking customers if they wanted to put it on their “tab”. Here’s to good burgers and good times.
