What-A-Burger Concord, NC

July 19th 2008 21:53
My son had been dying to go to Whataburger to get some Cherry Lemon Sundrop that his teachers raved about. Whataburger in Concord, NC is not affiliated with the national chain. From what I understand, it used to be part of a regional chain in NC. In any event, the decor is similar to an old-fashioned burger joint. As soon as you go in, you have to watch your step. And I do mean literally watch your step. The door step is about six inches off from the curb when you go in and there is a big sign as big as day ( I saw this on the way out) that says “Watch your step”. I obviously failed to see that sign and tripped over the step falling into the restaurant….nothing like making an entrance.

The food was great…big burgers on a big bun with all the trimmings, thick cut French fries served in a paper tray covered in wax paper…just like my dad always served them. I had a grilled chicken salad complete with home made Ranch dressing…talk about goodness! Large servings, fast service and affordable prices….but…I found out after giving her my order that this was a cash only place. They do not take debit/credit cards…I could not believe such a place existed…how could somewhere possibly run a restaurant on a cash only basis? So after I gave my order and the lady said they could not take cards, I explained to her I did not have any cash on me. She promptly directed me to the ATM sitting inside the restaurant…go figure. So, I took out money from the ATM which of course was not one from my bank and got hit with a $2.50 service charge from the ATM and then got hit with a $2.50 service charge from my bank for using a foreign ATM. Immediately added on $5 to the cost of our dinner…not very happy about that.

Will I go there again? Yes, and I will do two things. I will take cash and I will definitely watch my step. Overall good place to eat but I am begging you to get a real cash register. .Just my opinion.

I've been to that place so many times in my life and though I don't even live in the US anymore when I go to visit family I'll drop through there. Sometimes I just crave a "Witch Doctor" even though I rarely drink soda anymore. But something about dill pickles in a drink to help wash down a "What-A-Salisbury" make it worth it.

Unfortunately, last time I was there cherry Sun-Drop was used for the drink. It used to be "actual" Cherry Soda. Syrup-y, delicious, and probably not at all good for you.

Regardless, I just found this post randomly today looking for something else and was glad I did! Brings back plenty of memories. As for the cash-only basis, let's just say the normal clientele probably works on a cash-heavy system.
